Actually, I thought this was probably what they did as I was trying to fall asleep this morning. I briefly unhooked the old switch, realized the new one wasn't going to match up, hooked the old switch back up.) (Also, I know the wires should be spread farther apart or capped or something. 3 wires plus a ground.the white one is supposed to be neutral right? I won't be surprised to hear, again, that I'm wrong but.before I give up on the idea of a motion sensor switch completely, and to make sure I understand what I'm looking at, I figure it's best to ask. This is the wiring at the switch that I opened up today. Is it possible that they did something super weird with the wiring and the two switches aren't connected by a traveler? From what I've read, it's not the way it's done.but is it "possible" that each switch is wired to the light fixture, but not technically to the other switch? Like, could both switches be wired like plain single whatever switches but still somehow control the same light fixture? Again, I realize that's NOT the way it's done, but we have some light switches that don't seem to actually control anything so a really weird, not right situation wouldn't be super surprising to me. I can try to get a picture of that tomorrow. I didn't take the second switch apart to see what the wires were on that side. White is neutral isn't it? The house is a little older, built in 1996, but shouldn't it have a neutral wire? I thought neutral was "standard" by the late 80's or early 90's and since this was mid-90's it doesn't seem like they would have wired the house without a neutral wire would they? (Actually, there's some weird stuff here so I suppose it's possible.) If I ignore the ground wire, this switch box - the house side of the switch situation, has three wires - black, red and white. ![]() Also my excuse for incorrectly naming the wires I was seeing, or thought I was seeing. ![]() I took a picture of the switch I was looking at this afternoon but too many distractions were going on and I forgot it.

![]() Red oaks have a cluster of buds at the ends of their branches: a terminal bud with many scales accompanied by two or three slightly smaller laterals. Its lateral buds are opposite and leaf scars are V-shaped. For example, the sugar maple has a sharp, pointed terminal bud with many scales. Looking at all of these features together makes it relatively easy to identify most deciduous trees in winter. The leaf scar located below the winter bud – where the leaf fell off in autumn – varies in size and shape and is another identifying characteristic. In others, such as elm, the side buds occur singly as they spiral up the stem – a pattern called alternate branching. In some species, such as sugar and red maple, the lateral buds are paired and opposite each other on the twig. With practice and the help of a field guide, you can identify trees in winter by examining their buds, as well as the arrangement of buds on the stem. Some, however, like bitternut hickory, have naked buds instead of bud scales, the outermost pair of leaves is thick and waterproof and completely encloses the inner leaves.īuds come in a diversity of colors, shapes, and sizes. Most deciduous tree buds have overlapping scales to protect the delicate leaves and flowers inside. ![]() In trees without a true terminal bud, such as basswood, the lateral bud closest to the end of the twig – called a pseudoterminal bud – will grow the branch leader. Heinrich found the leading shoots of several deciduous trees in Maine had already grown six inches by late May, while most of the lateral buds had not yet opened. So the terminal bud releases a growth hormone that stimulates elongation of the main shoot and inhibits growth of the buds below. A tree’s first priority, explains Heinrich, is growth at the apex to reach sunlight. Lateral buds on the sides of the stem will grow as side branches. Most trees, such as sugar maple, have a terminal bud at the end of each twig this will become the leader of the branch. According to Vermont biologist and author Bernd Heinrich in his books Winter World and Trees in my Forest, pre-formed buds enable trees to begin growing quickly in spring, allowing them to make the most of a short growing season. Some trees have separate buds for leaves and flowers so they can open at different times, while in other species, flowers and leaves are contained within the same bud. If you slice open a bud and use a magnifier, you can see tiny green leaves and flowers folded up inside. By withdrawing water from them before winter, deciduous trees protect their buds from frost damage. These buds formed last summer and are designed to withstand snow, ice, and subzero temperatures. However, each twig holds many buds – small, wrapped packages of potential awaiting the spring. The bare branches of the trees outside my window seem lifeless in late winter. ![]() Toyota dealers nearby are fully-stocked with guaranteed Toyota OEM replacements to make sure your Toyota stays running like brand-new. ![]() If you need to rewire a house to bring it outside, upstairs, or add circuits, it will cost more. The lower price is for moving it 10 feet with nothing that needs repairing or brought up to code the electrician just needs to extend the connections. The cost to move an electrical panel is $800 to $2,500. Instead of adding circuit breakers to your main electrical panel, simply add a sub panel. A sub panel is also a good solution to the electrical needs created when you finish out a basement or add on a room. The cost is less than what you’d pay for the main electrical panel because it is smaller and has fewer wires running through it. A sub panel box is smaller and usually supplies electricity to a garage or a small building. The cost to install a 40-amp sub panel is $452 installed, and a 50-amp sub panel is $482 installed. If it trips often enough, soon it will need to be replaced. It will also trip if there is a significant surge of electricity, such as lightning. If one of the smaller circuit breakers fails to trip, the main circuit breaker will trip, as a backup. The main circuit breaker shuts off the electricity to the house in one move. Replacing the main circuit breaker costs between $40 to $100 for the part and another $40 to $100 per hour to have an electrician install it. Most of the cost is for labor-the average cost for an electrician is $40–$99 per hour, and this job can take 2–3 hours. I wish I could’ve dug in deeper with them.”Īccording to Erlandson, the final Unplugged set list wasn’t settled until a day before the taping. “As musicians, they were way out of our league, but somehow, the melding of their free jazz-slash-John Zorn training with our ethos worked. “I loved working with Erik, Zeena, and Ralph,” Erlandson recalls. In short order, the arrangements began taking shape, Erlandson reflects, and slowly, “Hal brought in some of the cream of the crop from the New York City’s avant-garde scene to fill things out.” Among them were harpist Zeena Parkins, cellist Erik Friedlander and the late Ralph Carney on “clarinet, tuba and other horn things.” “ I have very fond memories of that performance: It was just as Hole and Live Through This was really getting a lot of traction and success, and we had just found out we’d be headlining Lollapalooza with Sonic Youth, so MTV Unplugged was a musical challenge and an opportunity for us to shine.” We really have to be prepared.’” She says she remembers “having to really - just as a player - to tune it down a little bit, and to just listen … to use my ears and not hit so hard and think about all the delicate parts to the songs.”Īuf der Maur tells Billboard the taping came at an instrumental moment in Hole’s career. “Thinking about taking our songs and really stripping them down … it really shows your musicianship, for one, and so everybody in the band was like, ‘Oh, we’ve gotta bone up here. ![]() Schemel was also excited by the challenge that an Unplugged taping presented for Hole as a group. “The acoustic part was not out of Hole’s comfort zone, as most of the songs were written on an acoustic guitar, but it was the transposing of guitar solos, hard-hitting, punk-infused drum parts, which was the fun part.” “ His assignment was to refine a raw rock band into an acoustic and classy one,” she explains. “You think you know somebody, but they don’t mind the tuba, and you’re surprised by it.”Īuf der Maur has fond memories of working with Willner that week. Schemel even recalls a tuba player coming in for some of the sessions, and being disappointed by Love’s lack of commentary. “I think I was like, ‘You’re all mean and’ … I mean, I really opened up, and it was not the time for that because we really needed to depend on each other for this taping.” “Every band has a dynamic - that family dynamic - and I remember thinking, ‘Should I really be honest here or do I just keep on kind of trudging through the way I know has been kind of OK for me to survive in my band - especially with my drug addiction?’” she explains. Schemel says she “ vaguely remembers” Hole’s therapy sessions that took place early in the week of Unplugged rehearsals, mostly because they were extremely awkward. The bassist adds: “It was a nice idea, but not essential to our survival at that point.” Most of Hole’s experiences during the Live Though This journey were shrouded with drama and emotions, and it was a quaint notion in 1995 for a band of our context - living in the wake of death and drug addiction - that some ‘speech’ group therapy would help our cause.” Cooper - and Patty and I giggled all week long about our session with ‘Agent Cooper,’ my beloved and all-time favorite Twin Peaks character. “To make matters even more melancholy, I remember clearly Hole had its first of only two ever band therapy sessions,” says Auf der Maur. Reflecting back on the experience a quarter of a century later, Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur tells Billboard she distinctly remembers an air of sorrow looming over the Unplugged rehearsals and ultimately, the taping itself. It was a little more than a year after the release of Hole’s second studio album, Live Through This, and less than two weeks after the first anniversary of the death of Love’s husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Project Reportīrown held it's session of the Algebraic Geometry North Eastern Series - known as AGNES - in October 26-28, 2012. The key aims of the series are to expose graduate students to a broad spectrum of research in the field and to improve communication between the many algebraic geometers in the northeast. This grant will support a series of algebraic geometry conferences in the Northeastern states. In particular, there are strong connections with recent work in theoretical physics (string theory). Many of the spaces occurring in nature are of this type, and for this reason algebraic geometry has found diverse applications in the sciences. This gives an opportunity to disseminate recent results and developments, and exchange ideas and views about future directions of algebraic geometry.Īlgebraic geometry is the study of spaces defined by polynomial equations. Every workshop culminates with an open problem session. Professional development sessions and introductory pre-talks are aimed particularly at graduate students. The workshops include research talks by renowned experts and junior researchers, both from outside the area and within. Each workshop is held over a weekend at one of the participating institutions. AGNES is a series of biannual workshops that intends to further the interaction and collaborations between the algebraic geometers in the area.
